The Role of Sociological Knowledge in Planned Rural Development

Planning models for rural development are far from perfect, reason why sociologists should both learn to work within existing frameworks and at the same time change them, with their input. The range of entrance points for sociological knowledge and skills should be expanded to all segments of development planning The convential range of operationally usable products generated by social scientists is still narrow and insufficient, it should be enriched particularly with forward looking action methodologies. Emerging research orientations characterized by increasing interdisciplinarity, hold promise and deserve the support and commitment of development oriented social scientists. Changing training philosophies in universities is crucial, to avoid producing new cohorts of socially incompetent technical experts or technically illiterate sociologists. Such changes will also help respond better to the fundamental calling of sociology: not only to analyze and explain, but also to assist in transforming the fabric of society.RésuméLes plans de développement rural sont loin ?être parfaits, et e'est pourquoi les sociologues devraient apprendre à la fois à travailler dans cc cadre et, par leur proprc apport, à les modifier. Ľutilisation des connaissances et compétences sociologiques devrait être étendue à tous les aspects de la planification du développement. Mais les produits de la recherche sociologi-que utilisables de manière pratique sont trop restreints et insuffisants. De nouvelles orientations de recherche, de type interdisciplinaire, tiennent leurs promesses et encouragent les chercheurs en sciences sociales orientes vers le développement. Changer les copnecptions de la formation dans les universityés est une tâche cruciale si on veut éviter de produire des cohortes ?experts techniques socialement incompétents ou de sociologues techniquement inalphabetes De tels changements iraient dans le sens de la vocation fondamentale de la sociologie, qui est non sculement ?expliquer et de comprendre, mais aussi de contribuer à transformer la mécanique sociale.KurzfassungPlanungsmodelle für die ländliche Entwicklung sind bci wcitern noch nicht vollkommen. Deshalb sollten Soziologen sowohl lerncn, innerhalb fester Bezugsrahmen zu arbeiten, als auch gleichzeitig dicse durch ihre Inputs weiterzuentwickeln. Die Einwirkungsmöglichkeiten für soziologisches Wissen und soziologische Fertigkeiten sollten auf alle Bereiche der Enewicklungsplanung ausgedehnt werden. Det herkömmlichc Bereich operationell nutzbarer Ergebnissc sozialwissenschaftlicher Forschung ist noch immcr eng und unzureichend; er sollte insbesondere um Methoden zur vorausschauenden Analyse des Handelns erweitert werden. Zunehmende Ausrichtung der Forschung auf Interdisziplinarität ist erfolgversprechend und sollte von cntwicklungsorientierten Sozialforschern unterstützt und als verbindlich angesehen werden. Entscheidend sind sich ändernde Ausbildungskonzepte an den Universitäten, um zu verhindern, daß weitere Kohorten von sozial inkompetenten technischen Experten oder von Soziologen ohne jedes technische Verständnis produziert werden. Solche Veränderungen werden auch hilfreich sein, um cincr fundamentalen Anforderung an die Soziologie besscr zu entsprechen: nicht nur zu analysieren und zu erklären, sondern auch bei der Umgcstaltung der Gesellschaft als Produktionssystem mitzuwirken
