Conventions and Voices in Margaret Fuller's Travel Writing

WXTE do not think of Margaret Fuller as a travel writer. For us she is the author of Woman in the Nineteenth Century, the editor of the Dial, a pioneering journalist, and a partisan of Roman independence. Like other nineteenth-century writers, however, she was attracted by the marketability of travel writing and found that its loose conventions provided an excellent framework for her own eclectic style and multiple purposes. Her travel narratives served as vehicles for multiple voices male and female, marked and unmarked, real and inventedwithout establishing a hierarchy among them or a sense of irreversible progress from one to another. Her travel book Summer on the Lakes and her letters to the New-York Tribune form an impressive contribution to the literature of American travel, demonstrate the genre's broad adaptability, and reveal the shape of her career and the direction of her thinking
