A methodology for inferring air temperatures based on vertebral growth rings of Nile perch (Lates niloticus) was developed and applied to a Predynastic archaeological assemblage from Hierakonpo‐lis, Egypt. Lates vertebrae suggest that, compared to today, greater year‐to‐year variability in temperature existed during the Predynastic Nagada II period. Archaeological evidence from several Upper Egyptian sites also indicate an increasing emphasis on the cultivation of land adjacent to the Nile, accompanied by an apparent settlement shift to this area. Variable temperatures combined with decreasing floods and rain may have contributed to a decrease in the predictability of wild and domestic resources, which stimulated the human inhabitants of the area to focus their activities nearer the Nile to gain more immediate access to the river's varied resources
