Iron age patterns and Sotho history on the southern Highveld

Recent work on Iron Age settlements in the Orange Free State and on Sotho traditional history has necessitated a radical revision of some earlier syntheses. With accurate data on location of historic sites, as well as chronological and ethnological controls, correlations between the historical and archaeological evidence are possible. There is an important dichotomy between the eastern settlements and those of the north‐west. The former represent a system developing in the Highveld environment, and they can broadly be attributed to groups ancestral to the Sotho of today. The north‐western sites can, on historical and ethnological evidence, be attributed to a Tswana group, the Kubung. This 500‐year‐old cleavage suggests that the difference between Tswana and southern Sotho is more significant than it is generally considered
