Chronotypes are the models through which time takes on practical or conceptual significance. This paper explores the tensions between two different chronotypes in the prehistoric archaeology of Bulgaria, one essentially linear and the other cyclical. Their development is traced in relation to the pattern of settlement, the subsistence economy, social organization, the treatment of the dead and development of calenders and record keeping
