EVERYONE AGREES that the scene of the Phaidros is most delightfully set by Plato; but few commentators have examined the setting in detail or produced a coherent account of the route taken by Socrates and Phaidros. Many no doubt take the view that one can appreciate the fine literary and philosophical quality of the dialogue without making this effort, and that such an investigation is a waste of time. But Plato himself spares no pains to depict the scene, not in broad colours but with a vase-painter's delicate precision of line. Again and again he goes out of his way to mention a particular spot, a particular shrine. The region is rich in mythological and religious associations; it may prove possible incidentally to throw a little light on other problems besides the special problem of the Phaidros. Recent work has added to our knowledge of this south-eastern quarter of Athens. And in any case, the quest leads along pleasant paths (pleasant in thought, in fact the scene is now sadly changed). I propose to recapitulate what Plato says; then to give my own interpretation; and finally to examine the problems involved, reconsidering some earlier views, especially those of M. L. Robin, the editor who gives the most systematic treatment of these matters, complete with map.'
