Verres and the Scene of Rewriting

This essay explores the fictionality of the second actio of Cicero's prosecution of Verres in the light of Verres' history of tampering with documents. It argues that both Verres' altered tabulae and Cicero's fictional speech summon communal memory by displaying an absence—with the crucial difference that Verres' alterations to the public record are culpable, while Cicero's are not. Cette étude se penche sur l'aspect fictif de la seconde action contre Vérrès de Cicéron, à la lumière de ce que l'on sait sur la manipulation des documents par Vérrès, et soutient qu'à la fois les tabulae remaniées de Vérrès et le discours fictif de Cicéron font appel à la mémoire collective en passant des éléments sous silence. La différence notable entre les deux est que les modifications par Vérrès des documents publics encourent le blâme, mais pas celles de Cicéron
