In this paper we wish to argue that what women have been trying to do in the last two hundred years has been very radical and a quite new departure in social formation. They have been, for the first time in history, trying to achieve some independence as persons and to exercise some power as individuals in their own right. This is what in our view has been the really radical move, for we do not believe that women have always and everywhere been oppressed, as is often suggested in the women's liberation movement, nor do we believe that women have never exercised power: that is patently not true. What does seem to be the case is that the political power that women have exercised in the past and in other societies has always derived from their position in a familial or kinship group. What the feminist movement did when it made a bid for the vote was to demand that women be treated as persons, as individuals, that the newly developing notions of individualism must be applied to them as well as to all
