The reconstruction of smoking as an unhealthy practice has given rise to a discursive field in which some people shy away from smoking identities that are tainted with the attendant notions of dirt and disgust and also from overt external control over individual behaviour. In many cases individuals demonstrate social competence by quitting smoking. Social and secret smokers challenge both binary understandings of smoking identities (smoker/non-smoker) as well as the addiction model that is prevalent in explaining smoking. Social and secret smoking are conceptualised as nomadic identities that are situationally constructed and deconstructed, but always with the potential to slip into one or other identity more permanently. While these identities remain ambivalent and appear to manage their own risks, they provide us with a window into the body as a potentiality rather than a problem and thus move us beyond a compliance/resistance schema. The paper concludes that ex-, secret and social smoking involve different types of socio-spatial competence and, in order to make sense of this, we utilise both Foucauldian and Deleuzo-Guattarian frameworks. La reconstruction de tabagisme comme habitude insalubre a mis en exergue un domaine discursif dans lequel quelques personnes évitent des identités de fumeurs qui sont souillées par des notions concomitantes de saleté et dégoût et aussi des contrôles manifestes et externes sur la conduite individuelle. Dans plusieurs cas, les individus font preuve de compétence sociale pour arrêter de fumer. Les fumeurs mondains ou les gens qui fument en cachette contestent les compréhensions binaires des identités des fumeurs (fumeur/non-fumeur) ainsi que le modèle d'addiction qui est répandu dans les explications du tabagisme. Être fumeur mondain et fumer en cachette sont conceptualisés comme des identités nomadiques qui sont structurées et déstructurées contextuellement mais toujours avec le potentiel endosser l'une ou l'autre des identités de façon plus permanente. Tandis que ces identités restent ambivalentes et semblent gérer leurs propres risques, elles nous donnent une fenêtre sur le corps humain comme potentialité plutôt que problème et par conséquent nous permettent de dépasser un schéma d'acquiescence/résistance. Cet article conclu que d'être non-fumeur, de fumer en cachette et de façon mondaine impliquent des types différents de compétence socio-spatiale et, pour que le comprendre, on utilise les cadres Foucauldian ainsi que Deleuzo-Guattarian. La reconstrucción del fumar como una práctica malsana ha dado lugar a un campo discursivo del cual algunas personas se rehúyen de identidades de fumar que están contaminados con nociones de mugre y repugnancia y también de control evidente external sobre conducta individual. En muchos casos individuales se demuestran competencia social por dejar de fumar. Fumadores sociales y secretos se desafían entendimientos binarios de identidades fumadoras (fumador/no fumador) también como el modelo de adicción prevalente de explicar el acto de fumar. Fumar socialmente y en secreto están conceptualizados como identidades nómadas que están hechas a una situación y deshechas, pero siempre con la potencial deslizar entre una u otra identidad con permanencia. Mientras estas identidades siguen ambivalentes y se aparecen mantener sus propios riesgos, nos proveen con una ventana al cuerpo como potencialidad en vez de problema y así nos llevan más allá de una esquema de conformidad/resistencia. El papel se concluye que ex-fumadores, secreto y social, se involucran varios tipos de competencia socio-espacial y, para comprender esto, utilizamos ambos esquemas Foucaultiana y Deleuzo-Guattariana.
