The process of regional integration in different parts of the world is one of the leading changes characterising the international structure in the second half of the twentieth century. This results from the realisation among geographically and politically proximate states that their interests can be better promoted and protected, both at the regional level as well as in the international political arena, by promoting integration through economic, political and national security co‐operation. Rarely, however, has proper attention been given to the role of internal security in determining external alliances, which is the theme of this article
