Middle‐Atlas Berbers have a remarkable fund of oral lore in which love poetry, giving rise to song and dance, occupies pride of place. Possibly the most interesting, though surprisingly little‐known genre, is the tamawayt, or Imayt, a high‐pitched lament heard at harvest time, or at the start of some musical entertainment. Practitioners of this noble art require great vocal skill, an intimate knowledge of various poetic devices, not to mention a thorough command of archaic terms in Tamazight. Although the genre has undergone transformation in recent times, it remains one of the more remarkable cultural traits of the Imazighen of central Morocco
