Initially started in the eighties, Puerto Rican Rock en Español did not become one of the most popular genres in the archipelago until the nineties. In the eighties, the number of local bands was small and most sang in English. Although local bands such as Mattador, Top Banana, and Cat Zapphire were popular, U.S. rock bands were the most popular of the decade. In the nineties, however, the number of bands and musicians interpreting Rock en Español increased considerably. 2 Like rock everywhere, however, Puerto Rican rock was not able to escape the capitalist logic of subsumption. Today it is heavily sponsored by large commercial interests, and thus most rock has been inscribed within a capitalist hegemony. Such hegemony, however, does not always prevent Rock en Español from taking on a dynamic political stance
