During 1933 there were nearly as many white doctors of philosophy as Negro bachelors of arts. In a situation of competition on the basis of units of educational preparation alone, the Negro graduates would be overwhelmed. There is, however, a certain protection in the social practice which restrains the white graduates from seeking positions in the Negro field.
