L'A. entend conduire son analyse du culte chretien des martyrs a partir d'une nouvelle approche: celle de Smith qui presente ce culte comme une localisation d'un type de piete utopique. En Egypte, ce culte trouve son origine dans les traditions indigenes de la region. Le christianisme egyptien devient ainsi une religion egyptienne christianisee. L'Apocalypse d'Elie incarne a elle seule le caractere regional du premier culte des martyrs
