Rouen in the Middle Ages. Remarks on the city's medieval Hebrew name The investigation of French Judaism necessarily requires the identification of place-names found in medieval sources. One of the most common Hebrew toponyms referring to a French city, found particularly in manuscripts, is the consonantal term RDWM, which with its orthographic variants RWDWM and RWDM occurs in twenty known instances. This term can refer only to Rodom (variants, "Rothom", "Rotom", etc.) - the commonly used short form, as early as Merovingian times, for the older Rothomagus, the original Latin name for Rouen
