Problems related to aging in India are not yet as serious as those in Japan and Western countries, but the proportion of elderly in India has been increasing. The population aged 60 years and older increased from 19.9 million in 1951 to 41.1 million in 1981 and currently numbers more than 45 million. Very little is known about the means of livelihood of the elderly population, the composition of households in which they live, their degree of financial autonomy, dependence on children, nature of contacts with their children, and the ways in which these have been changing in various socioeconomic strata. This book contains seven articles on social and economic aspects of the lives of the elderly in India. Articles by Ramesh Kanbargi and S. K. Biswas based on their in-depth village studies are especially interesting.
