In the Thiérache forest, the lean communities which had settled in the clearings well before the year One Thousand, grow in size throught the xith and xnth centuries. Parts either of the Empire of the French Kingdom, they have their rights acknowledged by the Lords of Avesnes and Guise, who then held the civil power. The resist the latest settled local lords, whose role they do not understand. Certain communities of pioneers are even granted communal right : it is the case of certain subsidiaries of Prisches, like Le Nouvion-en- Thiérache and Buironfosse. Theirs entitles them to a total administrative and financial autonomy, as well as the right of life and eath. One even notes a federation of communes around Nouvion-en-Thiérache
