Race Capital? Harlem as Setting and Symbol

Race Capital? is a collection of twelve essays written by leading intellectuals in African American studies and examines the multiple meanings of Harlem, New York. It begins with an introduction by Andrew M. Fearnley and Daniel Matlin and ends with an afterword by Farah Jasmine Griffin. The first section, “Mythologies,” includes essays that consider the varied ways that Harlem has been imagined as an exceptional black neighborhood and/or as the capital of African American politics and culture. In “From Prophecy to Preservation,” Fearnley deftly examines Harlem's mythology in terms of how its most ardent boosters of the early twentieth century looked toward a future Harlem as a race capital and how its late twentieth-century boosters looked to Harlem's past as a race capital to promote the community. Clare Corbould uses E. Simms Campbell's cartoons printed in African American newspapers to examine the contours of Harlem and black urban life in the late 1930s and early 1940s. Matlin examines the discursive juxtaposition of Harlem over time as a black ghetto and a black cultural capital. The writer and filmmaker Chester Himes is the subject of Paula J. Massood's “What the Matter with Baby Sister?” Through Himes's work, she demonstrates the problems associated with depicting Harlem's black life in film
