Till Death Do Us Part

Till Death Do Us Part began as conference papers at the 2014 meeting of the Organization of American Historians. It is hard to imagine a more satisfying fruit blossoming from the seeds sown there. Eight informative, accessible, and well-contextualized case studies examine a range of American religious, racial, and ethnic groups, in the process advancing the volume's larger theme—how U.S. death and burial practices reflect, confound, and reinforce American social divisions. Individual essays assess the burial practices and cemetery landscapes of diverse communities, including American Jews; Polish American Catholics; Chinese Americans; African Americans; Native, Hispanic, and white New Mexicans; and Arab Americans. The contributors spread their attention across urban and rural terrains, consider various sections of the country, and probe a wide range of faith communities.
