Vibrator Nation

At first glance, the subject of Vibrator Nation—the rise (and, to some degree, fall) of the feminist sex-toy store industry since the late 1970s—might seem more suitable for a magazine article or a blog post, but Lynn Comella has written a compelling and engaging book-length narrative that convincingly illustrates the value of exploring this microhistorical topic, and the pleasure that can be had in doing so. It is reminiscent of John D'Emilio's groundbreaking account of the rise of the gay rights movement, Sexual Politics, Sexual Communities (1983). Comella combines a highly traditional historical approach with autobiographical anecdotes from her own experience working in a sex-toy store. Occasionally she adopts an uncritical posture toward her subject, as when she refers to someone as a “sexologist,” without defining the term, but she achieves her aim of arguing that feminist sex-toy stores have created a viable counterpublic sphere for sex-positive entrepreneurship and retail activism, one where the idea that the personal is political is deployed in the service of a progressive—and potentially transformative—sexual politics.
