Philip A. Goduti Jr. is the author of two books on John F. Kennedy and Robert Kennedy, so it should come as no surprise that RFK and MLK spends more time on Robert Kennedy than on Martin Luther King Jr. Goduti's intent is to intertwine the activities and ideas of RFK and MLK from the JFK assassination in 1963 to their own murders in 1968. Lyndon B. Johnson looms nearly as large throughout this work. Goduti begins with the complicated and sometimes-bitter relations between RFK and LBJ, both during the JFK administration and its immediate aftermath. But most of what Goduti details, until RFK runs for president, is the evolution of RFK's ideas, essentially by analyzing his speeches in the Senate, across the country, and around the world. For King, these were complicated years. He began to focus increasingly on northern segregation and poverty, as well as coming to terms with black power and black nationalism and the meaning of the Vietnam War. Again, King's speeches are the most frequent sources Goduti uses to demonstrate this evolution
