Anti-Trans Attacks and the Necessary Transfeminist Sensibility in Brazilian Education

In different parts of the world, we are currently witnessing a context in which gender is notably central to mobilizations led by neoconservative sectors. In Brazil, the anti-gender discourse has underpinned official statements, institutional measures, and legislative proposals across the country, with an emphasis on the educational field. This article examines these disputes surrounding the right to education for travesti and transsexual people in a scenario fraught with anti-trans attacks. We argue that adopting a transfeminist sensibility when analyzing the dispute over rights to education can contribute to a better understanding of this situation. The defense of the recognition of gender identity in educational systems and institutions is one of our core arguments, as it holds the potential to amplify the democratization of education in Brazil. That is, this recognition can effectively guarantee access and retention for travesti and transsexual people in educational environments
