The Great Awakening in the First Congregational Church of Woodbury, Connecticut

I N the spring of 1739 the rate of admissions into the First Church of Woodbury, Connecticut, began to increase dramatically and remained strong until 1743. In four years, I38 persons (73 males and 65 females) entered the church, more than had entered in the previous i2 years.' The increase in admissions coincided with an extraordinary concern upon the part of many individuals in the town over the fate of their souls.2 In short, the Great Awakening had come to Woodbury. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the revival in the Woodbury First Church. It is true that this was only one of the very many communities on both sides of the Atlantic to participate in the Great Awakening, but it is hoped that an examination of the revival in one of its local settings will contribute to our understanding of the movement as a whole. With a sufficient number of local studies, we shall be able to discern more clearly the general patterns of the revival as distinguished from its local variations and subject the many generalizations about the Awakening to
