Protestant and Catholic Couples Who Have Chosen Vasectomy

A survey was conducted in 1970 in London Ontario of Catholic and Protestant couples in which the husbands had a vasectomy operation performed between 1966 and 1969 for the purpose of comparing them on actual and desired family size contraceptive use before the operation contraceptive failures resulting in unplanned births satisfaction with the operation and on such other demographic characteristics as age education and family income. Over 500 questionaires were returned about 63% of the total mailed. Respondents were 74% Protestants and 11% Catholic. Protestant males and females were found to be older and better educated than their Catholic counterparts and protestant couples had higher median annual family incomes. Catholic males wanted fewer children than their wives and the same relationship held for Protestants. Both groups had more children than they wanted which was more because of contraceptive failures than non-use of contraception. Catholics and Protestants had used several contraceptive methods before resorting to vasectomy. Both groups chose vasectomy at different average parity levels with the Catholics being higher than the Protestants. Both religious groups reported satisfaction with the procedure and have indicated increased sexual enjoyment and marital harmony but the Protestant couples are to a greater extent completely satisfied with their contraceptive action than the Catholic partners
