Railway Combination and Government, 1900-1914

W HIS article describes an attempt made by several large railway companies to combine and the reaction of the government, parliament, and public opinion to this attempt. To do this thoroughly means first taking a close look at the structure of railway enterprise and the position of rail transport in the national economy at the beginning of the century, for without this it is difficult to understand why the combination movement should have occurred and why the trading public and Parliament should have reacted to it in such a hostile manner. In the process, it is hoped that some new light may be thrown on the origins of the I92 IRailways Act, for this was in some ways the logical end to the activity in the period dealt with
