This cross-generational sample consisted of 221 young adult males and their 221 pairs of parents. Attitudes toward five role dimensions of the father position-nurturing, solving, providing, modeling, and recreating-were measured. The items measured what a father should do and were not directed toward measuring what the subject's father do. The sons expected fathers to be more nurturing and recreational and less active on the providing and societal model dimensions than did the father and mother groups. The category in which there was not a significant difference between the two generations of males was problem solving
