Trends affecting the rural population of France over the past 20 years are reviewed. These include the increase in second or vacation homes, the temporary occupation of several primary residences, the growth of urban fringes, and the structural transformation of populations in remote rural areas. Attempts by outsiders to lay claim to territory in formerly remote areas such as the mountain regions, and the consequent risk of conflict with local inhabitants, are noted. (SUMMARY IN FRE AND GER)
