majority are wage earners, with positions which tend to be in the public sector or related to activities of the State, rather than in the private sector. They have a high level of consumption, as attested by the fact that many own their homes and possess two cars ; they seem attached to their work, their dwellings and their way of life. And yet they are very militant, not only at the political but also at the trade union and associative levels. These individuals are in every way similar to those who belong to associations and also those who are active supporters of thé Socialist Party. The originality of this survey lies perhaps less in its confirmation of this social profile as in the findings of the cross-classifications. These reveals a correlation between the level of commitment and the level of social integration ; the most deeply committed readers tend to be those with the most satisfying occupations and types of consumption
