Urban Village Redevelopment, Public Participation, and Sense of Place at Multiple Scales

A Case STUDY of Luofeng Village in GUANGZHOU

Public participation and place meanings have recently become central to the Chinese urban policy discourse. Based on the questionnaire and qualitative data collected in Luofeng village, Guangzhou, this paper adopts the concept of sense of place as a novel approach to explore the influence of participatory urban redevelopment upon the lived experiences and social environments of urban village residents. The empirical results of the structural equation modeling analysis demonstrate that public participation has a significant influence on the villagers’ place dependence on the Project Exhibition Centre (PEC), where most redevelopment-related participation practices are conducted. Meanwhile, at the scale of the PEC, place dependence is a significant component of place identity that directly contributes to place attachment. Furthermore, it is found that the level of community participation contributes significantly to the degree of sense of place at the community level through a delicate network of place dimensions operating at two geographical scales. These findings highlight the sense of place as a crucial framework for critically and quantitatively assessing the social consequences and sustainability of China’s recent practices of participatory urban redevelopment
