Some Recent Studies of Population

H l OW many people will there be in the world in the next generation? How will they be distributed in relation to the resources of the earth? Is there hope of achieving a stable equilibrium among the variables that affect these relations? At the moment, such questions partake of the nature of conundrums, but progress is being made in finding the answers. A considerable literature has appeared within the past few years, which reveals a remarkable agreement among the demographers as to the probable course of the population changes now under way but wide differences as to the meaning of these changes and the nature of the policies suggested. This article will draw together references to some of these studies that are of especial interest to the geographer
