This article draws on reminiscences written by people who experienced and sometimes participated, willingly or otherwise, in the day-to-day workings of nazism. In line with recent work stressing the broad base of consensus (especially mass anti-semitism) that fuelled the regime, he has assembled a series of `encounters and voices' to evoke a more nuanced sense of nazism operated at the level of daily routine. Conventional historical analysis with its stress on underlying structures can miss the texture and feel of the everyday. Lüdtke argues the need for new forms - in this case collage - to convey the subtleties of complicity, acquiescence and resistance in the `patchwork of practices' in which people live and work, and, in the specific case of wartime Germany, to reveal how men could link their working experiences then with older, legitimizing, traditions of `German quality work'.
