My paper is framed as a retrospective, because I am addressing the ‘After’ part of our discussions on ‘Victorian Sexualities and After’. Specifically, what were the consequences of nineteenth-century regimes of sexuality for subsequent periods and especially for the 1960s and 1970s? I address this in two ways, both of which are unashamedly personal but in a historicized sense. First, I offer my memories of beginning to research Victorian society and culture in the 1970s. I write as a historian of modern Britain, a historian who along with a number of others of my generation made the transition from cultural studies to cultural and gender history. I also write as someone who has been concerned to understand the sexual and moral impact of the years after 1945 as a post-Victorian moment.1 Did this period mark a watershed break with the world of nineteenth-century social morality, or were there much longer continuities that connected postwar British society to its Victorian past? Peter Mandler and Susan Pedersen placed this issue on the agenda for intellectual history more than twenty years ago, but I want to reframe it in relation to sexuality.2 Foucault is predictably one big influence which shadows my recollections, but so too is Stuart Hall. A rather different Stuart, perhaps, from the one we have come to associate with the foundational moment of cultural studies.
