A reexamination of the scenes on an Attic red-figure column-krater in Metaponto indicates that the three women on the reverse are the Graiai, sisters and guardians of the Gorgons. The date of the vase—ca. 460 B.C.—and the iconography suggest that the representation was inspired by a lost play of Aeschylus, the Phorkides. A number of other vases with representations possibly inspired by the same play are collected and analyzed
