Laconian pottery was imported into Egypt possibly as early as the seventh century, but almost all the Laconian black-figured vases found there date to the second quarter of the sixth century. All are most likely from Naukratis, and of the 34 black-figured vessels, 18 can be attributed to the Boreads Painter. The strong showing of the Boreads Painter at Naukratis may reflect the ties of that city with Samos, where over half the vases attributed to the Boreads Painter have been excavated. The concentration of Laconian pottery in Naukratis may be due to the function of the vases as votive offerings, particularly at the sanctuary of Aphrodite
