Roger Martin du Gard's "Maumort": Memoirs, History and Mourning These imaginary memoirs, started in 1940, were still unfinished at the author's death in 1958; the choice of genre, which varied during the work's progress, is linked to the time of conception of the project, but also to Martin du Gard's incapacity to finish it, for reasons both personal to the author, and general to the post-war period in France
