Reviews research and theory on the universality or group-based specificity of emotional language and communication in mainly cross-cultural and cross-sex interactions. The experience of emotion, its causes and antecedents, and its expression in language and nonverbal behavior is discussed, followed by an examination of individual differences in the accuracy of emotional coding and decoding from the perspective of social skills and skills deficits. Research on the eliciting and explicating of social rules, codes, and styles around the communication of emotion within and across cultures is also detailed
