into two main islands, seaports have always been of great importance in handling commodity flows generated within the country. The role performed by seaports in the coastal trade has continually been recast to accommodate new developments in transport and changes in the volume and character of commodity movements. Recent adjustments in this role are considered here: first, by analyzing variations in the relative status of seaports in the coastal trade between 1950 and 1961; and, second, by examining changes brought about by the introduction of the rail-road ferry, G.M.V. Aramoana, between Picton and Wellington in 1962. A basic prerequisite for a study such as this is the selection of a single measurement to gauge the status of a port.
