Incendere usually means ‘to set ablaze’ and indicates that a person carries fire on a physical object in order to char it. Incendere is also likely to mean, in the metaphorical sense, that a feeling (described in terms of fire) ignites someone, that is to say fills him with ardor. In both cases, a person or an object is filled with a fire, be it concrete or abstract. This similarity can be explained by metaphoric matrices that combine the upward movement (characteristic of fire) with the concept of greater amount (Lakoff and Johnson: ‘more is up’). Thus, the verb can also mean ‘to give birth’ to a flame or a feeling, ‘to increase’ it, or ‘to fill’. In all cases, the concept of upward movement is paramount
