The Language of Schizophrenia

In 1802, i.e., the age of thirty-two, who had already previously suffered several attacks, fell ill an acute schizophrenic psychosis according to the medical diagnosis. In a letter to Hegel dated July 11, 1803, Schelling describes him as mentally quite unhinged, and though still capable of producing some literary work at least up to a certain point, his mind is completely deranged in all other respects. In August 1806, H61derlin's mother received a letter from his intimate friend, Isaac Sinclair, warning her it was no longer possible my unhappy friend, whose madness has become extreme, should [. I stay in Homberg any longer, and that if his freedom were prolonged, this might endanger the public large. After a few agonizing months in the mental hospital of Tiibingen, the patient was taken in by a Tiibingen cabinet-maker Ernst Zimmer board and supervision the end of his life. According to Wilhelm Waiblinger's information, he was not allowed to leave the house alone, but could only go for a walk in the outer courtyard in front of the house
