0. Despite its occasionally flamboyant or contrived rhetoric, the following is just a working-paper. It should be taken as no more than the record of work in progress.' 1. It is the premise, the main thesis and, I'm afraid, also the conclusion of this paper, that the concept of Free Indirect Discourse (henceforth FID)2 can be meaningful only within literary mimesis, and that its limits may be taken to mark some of the limits of the mimetic powers of language.
