"The Recoil of "The Speckled Band

If you ask ordinary reader which of Sherlock Holmes short stories he likes best, Jacques Barzun observes in Delights of Detection, the chances are that he will say: 'The Speckled Band' (Barzun 1980 [1961]: 150). There is much evidence to support Barzun's guess. Perhaps true Holmes afficionado is no ordinary reader; if you ask him or her this same question, though, chances are very good that you will get same answer. Thus readers of Strand Magazine, where Sherlock Holmes stories originally appeared, ranked The Adventure of Speckled Band first among forty-four stories by then collected in book form in 1927; in same year readers of Observer ranked it first among all of adventures, short stories, and novels; Baker Street Irregulars, in a 1944 poll of members, also placed it first and, at their 1959 one hundredth anniversary dinner, again named story as far and away their first choice; also in that year, a survey taken by Baker StreetJournal produced same result (Bigelow 1976: 47-50; Baring-Gould 1967: I, 262).
