John Dickinson at the Federal Constitutional Convention

A NNIVERSARIES of great events in American history, especially centennials and their multiples, always stimulate research and publication. We are still harvesting guides, bibliographies, and documentary publications inspired by the bicentennial of the American Revolution. What will the approaching bicentennial of the Federal Constitution yield? The centennial of the Constitution generated publications that continue to be useful: J. Franklin Jameson's Essays in the Constitutional History of the United States in the Formative Period, 1775-I1789, John Bach McMaster and Frederick D. Stone's Pennsylvania and the Federal Constitution, .1787-I1788, and Hampton L. Carson's History of the Celebration of the One Hundredth Anniversary of the Promulgation of the Constitution of the United States.' The sesquicentennial of the Constitution was commemorated by a congressional commission that republished documents, essays, pamphlets, and other literature of the Constitutional period and commissioned a volume the bulk of which, in recognition of its enduring value, was reprinted in I970 as The Organization of the Government under the Constitution.2 In I939, a substantial addition to Max Farrand's The Records of the Federal Convention of I787 was published: Joseph Reese Strayer, ed., The Delegate from New York, an edition of the Convention notes of John Lansing, Jr. Although Professor Strayer quoted Farrand's prediction that 'it is possible, indeed probable, that other records of the Convention will be brought to light,' 3 nothing new appeared for another forty years.
