Trabalho, fortuna e mobilidade de negros, crioulos e mestiços no Brasil do século XVIII

In eighteenth-century Brazil, more specifically in the urbanized slave areas of Minas Gerais, labour and increase of wealth often were aspects that were intricately related to personal and collective relations. This favored economic and social accession of freedmen (mostly freed women) and their descendants, who knew how to take advantage of all possibilities created by a society that was strongly marked by physical and social mobility, by biological and cultural miscegenation, and by an intense economic dynamism. The examples presented in this text are only some of the many registered cases in the extensive documentation that exists on this period and that has fostered the profound renewal of Brazilian historiography since the 1980s
