He was Director of the Centre for Cultural Studies, Birmingham and is now Emeritus Professor at the Open University and Chair of the Boards of the Institute of International Visual Arts (inIVA) and Autograph, the Association of Black Photographers. His most recent relevant publication is Different: Contemporary Photographers and Black Identity, with Mark Sealy, Phaidon Press, 2001.
