Grave goods recovered from Roman Ashkelon’s Eastern Cemetery help not only to date the burials but also to enlighten us as to the deceased’s faith and the funerary customs of this period. The finds from two recently excavated funerary contexts are presented here. They include a bronze handle in the shape of a panther and a mosaic depicting five pine cones, both Dionysian symbols. Dionysus was a god of wine, fertility, ritual madness, religious ecstasy, and theater. The myths surrounding him also portray him as a dying and rising god. The symbolism of the grave goods is connected with Dionysus in his role as “Deliverer,” who bridged the worlds of the living and the dead, and support the presence of an active Dionysian community within Roman Ashkelon
