Developmental Perspectives on the History of Childhood Among the shifting currents of scholarly inquiry it is possible to discern a growing interest in the study of in times past. A number of historians have undertaken detailed research into particular aspects of this subject; some of their projects are now complete, others are still in progress.1 The major professional organizations have recently included such work in the programs of their annual meetings, and, in March 1970, the first conference devoted entirely to the investigation of childhood and youth in history was held at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts
