IOCIO-ECONOMIC STATUS AND ORIENTATION TO WORK: THE CASE OF FARMERSSurveys among farmers in eastern England suggest that while farmers as a whole tend to bring a predominantly intrinsic-expressive orientation to the job, lower status farmers give particular emphasis to the value of independence, middle status farmers place more stress than others on social values, while those of highest socioeconomic status are the most business oriented. Previous research in the field of work attitudes suggests several possible forms of association between socioeconomic status and approach to work. First, value orientation may exert an independent influence on occupational choice and so help to determine status. Second, socioeconomic status of origin may constrain both occupational choice and the formation of work values. Third, orientation to work may be determined by experiences in the work situation and fourth, socioeconomic status may influence the salience of needs to be gratified in work and so affect work attitudes. These possibilities need not be mutually exclusive. Results of the survey were inconsistent with the fourth hypothesis, but tended to support the first three.RÉSUMÉSTATUS SOClOÉCOMIQUE ET ORIENTATION DE TRAVAIL DES AGRICULTEURSDes rechetches en Anglie orientale suggtrènt, que les agriculteurs généralement ont une attitude internellc-expressive au travail. Des analyses antérieurs rendent possibles plusieurs formes de connection de status sodoéconomique et d'attitude au travail. I. Orientation de valcur peut influencer indépendamment le choix de profession et, par ça, contribuer à la détermination du status. 2. Le status d'origine peut préscrire choix de profession et formation de valeun de travail. 3. L'orientation de travail peut être déterminée par les expériences de travail. 4. Le status sociéoconomiquc peut influencer la naissance de demandes, à satisfaire par le travail, et lesquelles touchent l'attitude au travail. Ces possibilités ne sont pas mutuellement exclusives. Farmer mit niederem Status unterstreichen dabei besonders den Wert der Unabhägigkeit; solche mit mittlerem Status legen mehr Gewicht als andere auf soziale Werte, während die mit höchstem sozio-ökonomischem Status rnehr geschäftsorientiert sind. Frühere Forschungen iiber Verhalten zur Arbeit lassen mehrere mögliche Formen der Verbindung von sozio-ökonomischem Status und Arbeitseinstellung erkennen. Einmal kann Wertorientierung einen unabhängigen Einfluss auf die Berufswahl ausübcn und so dazu beitragen, den Status zu bestimrnen. Zweitens kann der sozioökonomische Status der Herkunft die Berufswahl und die Bildung von Arbeitswerten festlegen. Drittens kann Arbeitsorientierung von Arbeitserfahrungen bestimmt sein, und viertens kann der soziookonomische Status das Hervortreten von Bedürfnissen beeinflussen, die in der Arbeit befriedigt werden sollen und so das Arbeitsverhalten berühren. Diese Möglichkeiten müssen sich nicht gcgenseitig ausschliessen. Die Ergebnisse der Forschung der Verfasserin waren nicht konsistent mit der viertcn Hypothese, schienen aber die ersten drei Hypothesen zu stützen
