There are several general types of schools in East Africa. Voluntary agency schools are those that have arisen under private auspices. Usually these are schools that have been, through the years, associated with religious or ethnic groups. Catholic, Protestant (Anglican), Muslim and schools for the separate religious and linguistic groups of Asians fall within this category. Catholic and Protestant schools catered mostly to the Africans and over the past few decades developed fairly elaborate educational programmes for working with them
