When i came to examine the subject set me by this Society I saw at once that it might be treated in two different ways. Both geography and strategy are imprecise words with elastic meanings. They may be concerned with the world at large, the land and water masses, the globe itself with all its resources. They may be concerned with narrower but no less important considerations: the characteristics of a coast, a country, a province, a mountain chain or a river valley. I could therefore have dealt with my subject on the broad lines of the illuminating address delivered by Professor E. G. R. Taylor to the British Association in 1947, or I could have confined myself to studying past and possible future campaigns in the light of their local geo? graphical features and the approaches to their theatres by land and sea. I was bold enough to decide to do both, that is, to look first upon the world as a whole and then upon theatres of war. That seemed the most interesting method. But when I set to work I found that within the compass of a lecture it was not possible for me to be thorough along those lines. The result is that I cannot promise more than a few suggestions and reflections, something to think about, disconnected ideas upon the subject. I hope it will be worth while and that you will not grumble if you find yourself rather abruptly switched from one aspect to another. To-day more than ever the strategist, like the economist, has to look upon the world as a whole. I do not mean by this that distance has been abolished; that is a cant phrase which may lead to absurdities. It would be absurd, for instance, to say that modern weapons and means of communication have made New Zealand as vulnerable as the British Isles. Common sense tells us that
