Complex webs of personal relationships surrounded early modern French nobles.Norbert Elias has noted that webs of personal interdependence, which he calls figurations, need historical study, and that there is a lack of models for such study.A figuration, in Roger Chartier's understanding of Elias, is a social form of variable extent in which the individuals involved are linked by reciprocal dependence.Networks of reciprocal dependence were of central importance in early modern society.'This article looks at the rights and obligations of friendship and clientage as mutual assistance relationships creating interdependent chains of nobles, and proposes a model of their characteristics.Case studies of relationships involving both women and men have been used as evidence. IThe terms patron and client are modern.Early modern French patrons and clients used the language of friendship, the terms ami and atnitie, friend and friendship, to refer to themselves. 2 In a letter to secretary of state Brienne in 1644, the governor of Provence, Louis de Valois, comte d'Alais, wrote that the baron de Marignane was such a loyal friend that he had made the baron's interests his own. 3Writing to the comte de Chavigny, Alais expressed satisfaction that his close friend, the baron de Marignane, had recently been named governor of the royal fortress of Tour de Bouc at Martigues. 4 A few years later, Alais wrote to Brienne recommending the baron as a close friend who possessed all the qualities needed for his land
